Back in the late 1960s when I was just an elementary school kid, my mother told me that we would leave the country if either one of two men ever became president.

The first was George Wallace.
The second was Ronald Reagan.

I'm convinced she truly believed that neither lunatic had a snowball's chance of ever becoming president.

Nixon took care of Wallace.
But Ronnie survived despite Poppy's best efforts.

We stuck around even so.

I'm not convinced to this day that that was the right decision.
