Judging by the way the riot police (in green) were interacting with the protesters at the beginning, they seem like unwilling participants in all this. Were they trying to protect marchers from the incoming onslaught but failed?

6. How can I possible know? Any number of things could have been happening.

Mahmoud Rabi'ee, Mousavi's campaign adviser in the Golestan Province, says criminal gangs have infiltrated the crowds and are initiating clashes with the riot police. Perhaps the people there senses a clash coming. But to be honest, the cops didn't look very threatening in that video.

I'm a bit shocked that you seem so definite about what was happening from that video.

2. Honestly, Ahmadinejad is a nobody puppet here.

These beatings and murders are the baby of the Supreme Leader, Khameni, as is the private army. Causing some to wonder how he has the nerve to call himself a follower of Islam, let alone one who leads the nation in (required) prayer.
