There has been a lot of commentary about Dr. Benjamin's weight since she was announced as Surgeon General nominee. I think this essay by Bill Moyer encapsulates the
real reason she is being criticized. The sexist, misogynistic, and somewhat race-based criticisms of Dr. Benjamin's BMI is really an effort to diminish and dismiss her as someone to be listened to and respected as a voice for health care reform. She has actually lived it. She has dedicated her life to actually providing quality health care to
everyone regardless of ability to pay. The health care industry has become everything that Dr. Benjamin has spent her career working against. It's a business where the most important thing is the bottom line $$. They have managed to drown out her very inspired and inspiring story with a chorus of "she's too fat". This is an attempt to ruin her effectiveness and keep people from taking her seriously as a voice for patients and real health care reform. IMHO.
