In the ensuing debate over the killer's motive and the breathless media coverage, it kind of got lost that these soldiers were real people with names, faces, and families.

You can think what you may about the wrongheadedness of some U.S. policies in the application of military force, but we shouldn't forget that those who carry out the orders are doing a dangerous, largely thankless job for little money.
