Frankly, I'm waiting for any reasonable proof that religion is bad for the world, but that's another story.

|
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 01:21 AM by Fearless
Of themselves each has arguments for and against. For instance if all you experience is good then when evil occurs you are not prepared for the consequences.
Religion into and of itself encompasses many good aspects and many bad. Fortunately all of the good can be found with other activities as well for those who do not believe in a god. Likewise, so too can the bad.

Well, most secularized nations are doing "better" for their citizens than religious ones. In fact...there's a correlation.... the worse the country is at providing for its citizens, the more religious. Of course it's not clear if the religion causes the crappy conditions, or if because their government sucks, the people turn to religion for comfort.
But I don't see how relying on and depending on or even hoping for supernatural solutions to problems is helpful in any way. Religion is useless for explaining how things work. It hinders a lot of progress because of it's lust for power it wants to hold on to.

and this episode was not one of those occasions. I didn't even laugh at the 'Sarah Palin supporter' line, and she's usually a sure thing for a laugh. He reminds me of Chris Matthews: he got very liberal when the Rah-Rah American nationalism thing was dying down. Previous to that he was an intermittent supporter of the Iraq War Fiasco. He is more attitude than insight imo.

I seem to recall Mr. Maher getting pitched from a major network for comments made during that time of insane patriotic fervor. I've been watching Bill for quite a while now and unlike Chris Matthews he's been very consistant on his stances.

Like what? That the 9-11 attacks were perpetrated by dangerous religious fanatics not by cowards? Or that its easy to be a warrior in this country when most of your killing is done by remote? Or that there was likely no WMD's in Iraq and the invasion was likely for oil? Or that use of military force is likely to increase the number of people that want to retaliate? These are examples of things I heard Maher say during the Bush years. What did you hear?

but in your defense the best I could come up with is that he appeared to be less skeptical when the first elections were taking place in Iraq. Before the invasion he was against it, and has since asserted that it was a complete failure.
But I was hoping you would at least come up with a quote or a you tube clip - I wouldn't mind proven wrong... I certainly don't share all of Maher's opinions... but on this issue he has been more consistant then the "professional" news media.

You asked what I meant, and I answered. Don't get me wrong. Maher is often funny and spot-on, but he's far from my favorite political comedian. So, yeah, 'mixed' feelings about him is my opinion of him. I am not trying to talk anyone out of liking him, though.

anti-religion. I too have some discomfort with organized religion, but also recognize its value to society and for many people. The problem I have is with the extremists, which are present in every denomination. I have problems with religious hypocrisy and cherry picking versus from scripture to support a cause, while conveniently ignoring others. I recently had this "debate" with a very religious person about homosexuality. He was an older man, and very nice. I'm sure I got no where with him. He believes what he believes. I also think it's ridiculous to interpret the Bible literally.

| 22. I doubt he's ever read a book on Buddhism |
|
or has any real understanding of the religion or philosophy at all.
It sounded more like he came armed with some wikipedia stuff or perhaps visited a website or two--and relied on the simple myths that create an image of nuttiness to this type of religion.
I can just see him in the make-up room talking to an assistant who is trying to explain it and him joking and nodding and thinking of lines with a dismissive, I get it, I get it, remark.
I love his political stuff. Some of that seems really insightful--but he sometimes misses the mark on religion because he can only pluck things from the surface.
And before anyone jumps on me for being a religious nut--no.
I like to read it from a philosophical point and that's pretty much it. I'm an atheist.
And by the way--Buddha pretty much said----"Try it--if it works for you, great. If not--try something else."
Like all religions--Buddhism picked up things along the way--particularly in Tibet--which added some pre-existing religious ideas to Buddhism when it got there.
At its most basic it read more like a philosophy than anything else.

For Tiger to quote..supposedly...says he didn't bother to read anymore than Bill did about the process of enlightenment, but then, you've got the same within any religion: Those who think they know what it means and those who do, but just grin and snicker at the rest.

Hate it when he's on hiatus. Olivia Wilde was awesome but who shocked me last week was Norah O'Donnell - I didn't see her as any kind of liberal from her work so I was pleasantly surprised as she came off more liberal than I thought.
Try as I might not to, when I learn about the politics of actors it does change my view of them. Even with dead ones. I love watching old movies on TCM and my opinion of Irene Dunne sure plummeted when I found out she was a 100% right wing tool. Conversely I always admired Myrna Loy, love the "Thin Man" movies with William Powell, but my opinion went even higher when I read how progressive she was, she really took some stands for civil rights way back in the day.
Whatever, it's sure nice to have Maher back, one more popular voice to call out the likes of Palin.

it's more about the give, give, give of ourselves to make it a nicer place. I think Tiger was saying it wasn't about his needs first, he should of prioritized those of his wife. At the same time the whole sex addict notion is just a get out clause, maybe you can have faithfulness guidence than to say liking sex is wrong.

I am not a spammer - I am just a DU'er like most other folks here :) The version of the 'new rules' video that I posted here on DU was the only one available on YouTube. It's really hard to find any video at all of 'new rules' most of the time. No one had to leave to DU to watch the video I posted here on DU... I know nothing about the other website you are referring to.

Everyone would be screaming if he said those kinds of things about christianity or jesus. But if it's about the Buddha or eastern religions, he gets a chuckle and a pass. Just another religious hypocrite.
But the rest of his stuff is still pretty funny.
