Truman and Brezhnev were two examples of the Peter Principle at work: two party bosses who worked themselves up to a level where they got approval from their respective Politburos, while forgetting the common man. Brezhnev set the Soviet Union on a trajectory to tank 25 years after he got in, but capitalism has proven more resilient. It won't tank because central planners forgot who to plan for. The US will die the death of a thousand cuts, each one made by a CEO who gets a bigger salary for outsourcing jobs and cutting expenses on health and safety.
