| 2. k&r - The rise started way back in the 90's with the privatization of prisons - |
|
and I knew while in Australia that a prison making a profit would only encourage incarceration as well as keeping them in. I mean who lobby's for the 3 strike laws and min sentences that make no sense? Private Prisons do.
I am against min sentences because it takes the power away from the judge to make decisions based on each case. It also is harshest on criminals that are easier to house. Non-violent criminals, drugs etc. But people always ask how it is that child molesters get out before someone caught with pot. The answer is simple - child molesters require special provisions, housing and more security than drug abusers. Our prisons also became 'Hospitals for the Mentally Ill' when they started to privatize at the same time they closed State run Mental Hospitals.

I wondered after Tuesday's election if this was a big contributor to the defeat of Prop. 19 in California?
It seems the largest opponent to Prop. 19 would be those who stand to profit from maintaining harsh laws against the use of cannabis.

| 9. Not sure, I do know that many law enforcement agencies supported prop 19 but there was |
|
the threat of sending in the DEA if it was passed and the DEA was against it. So it would seem to me that prohibition is to profitable on all sides. But the average cop would rather be doing something else.
