And to be honest, at this point I think that if Al Gore took office in 2000, then the right-wing blowhards would still be a latent, cancerous disease in our culture sucking more and more people into their way of thinking because they haven't had their proving ground. In other words, they would have had more time to prepare their base operations.
So in a way, it's a mixed blessing that they came into power when they did. We still have around generations who do remember what it's like to have a government that had a semblance of honesty, who do remember having strong unions, fair wages, affordable housing, environmental standards, an FDA we could trust, affordable health care costs, and lots of stuff made with metal and strong fabrics, that wasn't made out of plastic and didn't break shortly after warranty. So they're not fooling everyone with their demonizing talk about "big government", "socialism", and their infantile fear of communism. In fact, they're fooling fewer and fewer people these days.
