| 5. I wonder how Fox News finds all the imbeciles they feature. It is just |
|
amazing. That guy was simply not smart enough to read the list of demands.
I notice that the most frequent complaint by critics of the Occupy Wall Street protest is that the goals of the protest appear to be unclear.
The protestors have said that they are listing the problems that need to be dealt with and that the protest is about coming together to find the solutions for the problems through consensus. What is so hard to understand about that?
Isn't that the way functional (as opposed to dysfunctional) families, relationships, clubs and other groups work? That has been my experience. Roberts Rules of Order even provides for someone suggesting a resolution, someone seconding it and then discussing the proposed resolution, making changes and finally rejecting or adopting it. This is the time-tried way in which decisions are made and solutions agreed to in groups.
I realize that Fox News is all about authoritarianism.
It seemed to me that the Fox News commentators were dismissing the democratic process used by the protestors as being ineffective and naive. What do they think happened when the Founding Fathers joined in their first meetings -- even at the Constitutional Convention. There were lots of points. It seemed chaotic, and then people agreed after discussion and working on what they needed to say and do.
Fox News -- How stupid can you get?

| 8. It's becoming clear that demanding somebody else fix a problem is not a solution |
|
Our basic problem is that the system is broken and that neither business nor government has any serious interest in fixing it.
The sub-problems are all the different ways in which the system is broken. There are dozens, and only a handful are amenable to any sort of legislative fix, even if one could be put through under present circumstances.
Ending the wars, repealing the Bush tax cuts, and reversing Citizens United are probably the most obvious "fixes" -- but even those only address the symptoms and not the disease.
The real long-term goal has to be a society that prioritizes basic human needs over profits. And it's going to take a while to figure out what such a society might look like and how it would operate, let alone put it into practice.

needs of my family over everything else.
It looks like the US is headed toward poverty. Maybe we will recognize our priorities once we realize where we are headed. I think the Occupy Wall Street movement is a good reminder to the country that things are not going well and that we are headed toward mass impoverishment. We still have the time to turn this around.
First thing is that big companies like Google and Microsoft need to simply pay the taxes they owe on the money they earned overseas. Here we are in a financial crisis, and these extremely wealthy countries want a special tax break. Horrors!
That is just unbelievably irresponsible.
