I can't think of anything that is better suited to be a sticky thread at the top of the DU forum than this.
I did not know this tidbit of history. It's like finding that perfect puzzle piece. Disgusting.

| 5. FOX undermines the press. |
|
Those documents are so damning.
I think they've used the 1st Amendment to distort the truth. That's treasonous.

| 6. This is the Right Wing Propaganda Machine just like that of |
|
20th century Fascism. The only way to stop it and Fascism in this country is hue and cry and call it for what it is, Right Wing Propaganda, e.g. the top one percenters are "job creators." Right Wing Propaganda, paid for by the Top One Percenters.

| 7. They're using Nazi propaganda.... |
|
"Propaganda must not investigate the truth objectively and, in so far as it is favorable to the other side, present it according to the theoretical rules of justice; yet it must present only that aspect of the truth which is favorable to its own side. (...) The receptive powers of the masses are very restricted, and their understanding is feeble. On the other hand, they quickly forget. Such being the case, all effective propaganda must be confined to a few bare essentials and those must be expressed as far as possible in stereotyped formulas. These slogans should be persistently repeated until the very last individual has come to grasp the idea that has been put forward. (...) Every change that is made in the subject of a propagandist message must always emphasize the same conclusion. The leading slogan must of course be illustrated in many ways and from several angles, but in the end one must always return to the assertion of the same formula." ~ Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler

| 17. I would not be surprised to find out that these people admired |
|
the Nazis and studied them, especially their propaganda machine which was so effective, tragically.
It's way past time to do something about this here, a whole generation or more has been totally indoctrinated by this kind of fake journalism.

| 9. I remember when this was first porposed by the Nixon White House |
|
My father, a Washington print journalist, was dumbstruck at the time. This was Soviet "TASS" coming to the USA. He called up Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield to get his take, and was royally pissed when Mansfield didn't immediately condemn it, but rather said it was an "interesting concept."
It didn't get a lot of press at the time, but it didn't go anywhere, either. I didn't know who Ailes was back then, but it makes sense that it was his baby, and Murdoch eventually let him run with the project more than 20 years after Nixon wouldn't.

| 12. So it is no secret. It sure is a misuse of the 1st Amendment. |
|
There really ought to be a way of sorting out free speech versus propaganda. This is a danger to freedom. These turds talk about freedom like it's a meal, yet they tromp all over it with glee. Of course this is about power and money.
It's really interesting to hear what your experience with this was. I wish I knew what Mansfield was thinking.

| 14. My father said Mansfield was being overly cautious |
|
As Senate majority leader, he thought it was better to figure out his response at his leisure. My Dad was furious that Mansfield's immediate reaction wasn't one of complete revulsion, but his job wasn't to report what he wished was so, but what really was said. This was back in the days of real journalism, you have to understand.

| 15. And so there it is in a nutshell. How we ended up embracing fascism. |
|
Politics isn't a service, it's a job. And covering one's ass is tantamount.
Man, I'm so grateful you shared that. Things don't seem to be different no matter how far one goes back. We're on the brink of changing that I believe. I hope. My hope is OWS has enough mass to move things, and that FOX simply becomes irrelevant.

| 16. Fox will never become irrelevant |
|
As long as there are people willing to let others think for them, and people willing to pay for propaganda outlets like Fox, Fox will serve the American radical right the same way TASS and Pravda served the CPUSSR. The only difference is that many more Soviet citizens knew they were being lied to than American Fox viewers do today, astounding as that may seem, given our technological capabilities for informing ourselves on our own these days.
The difference is that the Soviets WANTED to know the truth. Foxsuckers do not.

| 13. They have been for a long time. We need those who represent 99% |
|
of US to tell it like it is, Right Wing Propaganda funded by neo Fascists like Kochs and Norquist et al
Unfortunately, except for a very few, it's hard to find those who represent 99% of us, unless maybe it 's the OWS folks.
