And saying Medicare is broke is like saying the Food Stamp program is broke, or the unemployment benefit program is broke. It's not supposed to pay for itself, and the taxes collected for it went to pay for the Iraq war. It's a social safety net program, and it was created b/c it's the least expensive way of taking care of the medical needs of old people who can no longer work. Putting private insurance cos. further into the mix only makes it more expensive, meaning more taxes. The only way to avoid paying taxes for Medicare and food stamps would be to let old sick people die and let poor people starve on the streets. You've been watching too much Fox News.

1. Medicare did not only pay for the Iraq war, it payed for the

tax cut to the rich. Our government has borrowed from China to pay partly for the war, if I am not mistaken. Anyway. bush and cheney did us good, meaning they tore this country up and handed out dividends to all their rich buddies and now they sit there laughing at the mess they made and blaming it all on Obama.

2. I disagree, we pay a specific Medicare tax

That is supposed to cover the cost of Medicare. If it isn't, there's a problem. It's not like social security where there has been an excess tax that was supposed to go to cover boomer retirement. That money was given to the rich with the Bush tax cut. Medicare is different, and also different than food stamps which comes out of the Ag budget because it's a farm subsidy.
