The vitriol from the left is astounding. "Fucking traitor," a DUer called Obama today.
The MSM runs a headline about Obama's "record-high $708B military budget," and the left screams "warmonger!!." Forgetting every defense budget has been a "record-high" since the 1940s.
The left is being fed red meat, and is gobbling it up. The media is only to be distrusted when it tells us what we don't want to hear, apparently.
The post-game on this presidency will point this out, and marvel at how much Obama could have done had he not been attacked from a frighteningly easily manipulated left wing.

It's all emotional button pushing, and the left falls for it as much as the right. Whatever happened to facts and logic??

People get upset without really knowing what's going on or taking the time to find out. Goes for both parties.

shoveling it in..those who are benefiting like fdl are loving all the bucks stuffing their coffers.
And, oh so freakin' predictable..I saw that "military budget" headline and knew the internet whiners would use it as license to take their screeching up a notch or 10.
"Warmonger"? Yeah, you idiot, bc you can't think beyond a headline.

| 10. That headline was absurd. My husband saw it and said "what?!" but then read the FIRST SENTENCE |
|
and was amazed that the American media was allowed to blatantly just "make shit up" like that.
The headline we saw was "$708 billion for the two wars" completely overlooking the fact that a) that figure was for the entire defense budget and defense budgets are comprised of many things, not just war funds and b) that Obama is drawing troops out of Iraq and that most of the money (actually about $33 billion worth of actual war funds) will go towards the war in Afghanistan -- the war that the majority of Americans actually supported. Even if those numbers change, there is no way that a headline blaring "$700 billion for two wars" is in any way accurate.
And I see your "fucking traitor" comment and raise you a "worse Democratic president EVER," "lying lightweight con man," "he should be arrested for treason" etc. etc. etc. At this point, the quality of the comments have crossed idiotic, passed offensive, left hysterical in their wake and have actually become laughable.

they need to be told how to think. Just look at the standard posting style here. The standard DU post:
Hey check it out I like this opinion.
Response- I agree
Response- I disagree
Response- IBLT
Response- I alerted on you
Response- Well I have this article and I like their opinion much better
Response- POOPY HEAD!
There is so little actual debate or discussion and little signs of critical thinking. Hell the same can be said of most of the nosensical blogger posts that make up the opinions posted. So is it little wonder that this same group is incapable of figuring out they are being manipulated or used?

I looked briefly at your thread today. I tend to stay away from military spending threads because I don't expect any President or Congress will ever act in accordance with what I feel on the subject, so it's just not worth the energy.
But ... I looked at the graph. Am I mistaken, or did it indicate that spending for Iraq/Afghanistan was actually decreased while the larger military budget was increased? Personally, if that's true, I'd consider that about as positive a note as one could find on this whole thing.
In any case, I agree with your overall point.

|
...It may be true, but the graph I put up uses figures almost a year old. It was meant only to illustrate the gradual growth of defense spending over the years, and how even Obama's new "record" budget wasn't a departure from the trend.

They don't even hold a majority at DU - they just contaminate the sight.
The obviously don't hold a majority of the Democratic Party and will never get close to convincing the country of anything.
Most of them believe that 9/11 was an elaborate scheme conducted by Bush despite the fact that the guy couldn't organize a golfing trip without major assistance.

| 21. I'd love to hear from a historian about FDR's critics at the time. |
|
My sense is that he had an equal amount of flack blown his way as he tried to pass Social Security and other progressive actions. But time has vindicated him to all but the die-hard conservatives.
I think Obama knows what he's doing and that all this crap will be blown away like chaff before too long.

I'm not a working historian, but that's my training. I'm mostly late 19th century politics, but I dovetailed into progressive era up through the late 30s with some of the stuff I've done.
Anyway, I posted a small thing about this the other day and have been casually working on a longer piece. The people who think everyone loved FDR from day one and that he had it all solved in a year (or even four) are either delusional or woefully misinformed, or both.
