Obama is taking the long view on this budget freeze thing.

Sen.Kent Conrad was on Newshour last night (he's chairman of the Budget Committee) and he approves of the move to freeze spending in 2011. Says that without doing something to cut back, Social Security and Medicare are going to go broke, and overall we'd be running into an "economic tsunami".

Interview starts at about 3:30. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/video/module.html?s=news01s3991qda6

Meanwhile people who aren't thinking that far ahead are moaning and wailing about what harm this might do in the short-term. But it won't be as dramatic as it seems. It's just a prudent trimming of government excess, and it's smart politically for Obama to announce this now.
