1. Mike Pence: Why is unemployment so high despite your promises of Stimulus change?
Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 08:09 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Our stimulus bill was 1/2 as much and using your models, it would have created double the jobs. Blah blah blah...would you consider across the board tax relief we want?

2. Obama: Let's talk about jobs environment generally. When I was sworn in, the hope was that
unemployment would remain about 8 or in the 8 percent range. We lost 650 K jobs in December, Im assuming you arent faulting me for that. We lost 700K jobs in January, the month I was sworn in , Im assuming it wasn't my administration that faulted that.

...

The package should have reflected what most of you would say are common sense things. The notion that this was a radical package is just not true.

You said you'd broadcast the HC debates on CSPAN, allow lobbyists.

11. Once it got through committee process, and there were now a series of meetings, that was a messy
process. I take responsibility for not structuring it.

With respect to earmarks: No earmarks in recovery act. We didn't get credit for it-but no earmarks in that. I was confronted with an omnibus package that had a lot of earmarks from a lot of people in this chamber. The economy was melting down, I said "let's keep them to a minimum" but couldn't excise them all.

The challenge I would have for you, as a freshman: What are you doing in your caucus to make sure I'm not the only one working on this.

12. In terms of lobbyists, I can stand here unequivocally and say there has not been an administration
that has been tougher on lobbyists. If there were lobbyists that were already in place, we did not kick them off. We said moving forward, there will not be a lobbyist in their place.

There have been a handful of waivers where someone is highly skilled: For example, a Dr. who ran Tobacco Free Kids is a lobbyist, but has more expertise than anyone else.

14. Marsha Blackburn: Did the Democrat Congress Stop You from getting our awesome ideas?
Obama: No. I got your ideas. Your ideas are terrible but hey, if you can get someone who isn't a nutjob to say it's a good idea, I'll consider it. You presented this idea as a Bolshevik plot when it's centrist.
