| How the call to Nationalizing everything is the new "Yes, We Can!" |
|
I've noticed the same recurring call for everything wrong with this country; nationalize it.
Health care isn't working? Nationalize it!
Financial Institution failing? Nationalize them.
Oil Spill ain't being stopped by BP? Nationalize it!
That's not an answer....that's just passing the buck to a fairy tale notion that government is always better than private enterprise at all times.....and can do anything, even when it can't.
I want stricter regulations and oversight, but I don't want government running the entire show.
I'm trying trying to wrap my mind around how on the one hand folks want the government to be the answer to everything, while on the other hand, most folks don't trust...hell, don't even like the government, and that includes lefties.

| 1. It's the pure socialism stance |
|
It's every bit as short sighted and unworkable as those who call for an end to all government regulation.
They are to the left what Rand Paul, Sarah Palin, et. al. are to the right.

|
Edited on Sat May-22-10 07:44 PM by FrenchieCat
Shit happens; government steps in; shit is over.
government has been starved in order to drown it in a bathtub for like 30 years... and then 15 months in, Obama the socialist doesn't a job for everyone who needs one up his ass, and so he becomes public enemy #1.
Now, he doesn't have an oil plug big enough for a fucking disaster that took years in the making in his briefcase, and folks turn on him at the drop of a hat.
My honeymoon with Americans is over. Life ain't no fucking 30 minute sitcom, and the government ain't no sitcom producer.

is that if Obama had immediately stepped in and had the government clean up the spill, the far left would be screaming that he was doing BPs bidding, letting it off the hook, and that BP should be cleaning it up themselves.

|
The teabaggers, Repubs and that crazy woman that screamed "socialist! socialist!" to Obama when he was campaigning would absolutely LOVE for him to try to nationalize oil companies or any companies for that matter.
Ay yi yi. I want this oil spill over and done with, but I want all of the stupidity being displayed because of it over too.

|
They're all insisting Obama declare a national emergency and start seizing assets. The when asked what happens next that fixes anything, they're completely at a loss. (And I watched this happen today in a thread.) Oh, they give an answer, but the answer they give has nothing to do with seizing BP's assets. What they say will happen next is either a) a pie-in-the-sky fantasy scenario involving the Hall of Justice calling in the assistance of Aquaman, which doesn't require asset seizure or b) an idea that doesn't require (and could in fact be hindered by) asset seizure.
Now, to be clear, I have absolutely no problem with seizing BP's assets to make them pay for this. Other than that, it's not necessary and could in fact hinder efforts in the short term to fix this disaster and derails Congress completely.
They're just MAD, and they need someone to rage at.
Well, I'm mad too, and I think I'm going to rage at them.

| 8. Personally, I love how the DLC has become the biggest boogeyman |
|
in the Democratic Party.
They are an organization that is a shell of its former self. They have no money, barely any influence, and no one--NO ONE--in the mainstream even talks about them any more. Every other website I have visited where liberals discuss politics, the DLC is NEVER mentioned.
Yet here, they're somehow the fucking Illuminati/Opus Dei/Templar Knights of left-wing politics.

The DLC was built around a set of goals that from the outset were bound to make it less relevant as those goals were achieved. And they were achieved, WAY back in 1992. It started losing influence from that moment, even if it maintains a face and general membership.
Those who uses it as their Illuminati symbol also seem conveniently to forget those among their heroes who were members, strong voices in fact, for the DLC.

True, it is minus the "DLC" boogeyman, but still an appalling lack of knowledge regarding party history, how the senate works (and why it is assy), and reality.
Not to mention, there seems to be a few diehard PUMAs floating around. I'm not just throwing that term around, people who say "We need a woman president to fix healthcare--primary Obama!"
and Massa--what a great progressive he is! Except for that who sexual harassment thing...Damn Democrats!

Where were you reading?
I've been a member of that site since before the 2006 midterms and never ONCE did I hear anything about PUMAs there. The few Hillary supporters around got their asses kicked during the primaries by the overwhelming number of Obama supporters. In fact, the "Obamarama" megathreads we used to have ginned up over 300K in contributions to Obama in a year and a half.
Unless you were reading LF, that is (LF is not to be taken entirely seriously--stick to the main forum.)

| 22. We should nationalize those industries where other Developed Countries have shown |
|
that the private market is not producing increased competition and where state ownership provides better service to its citizens.
Health Care:
The jury has been in on this for a long long time. Socializing the insurance part of health care actually increases competition among health care providers.
Extraction Industries:
Norway has proven that by nationalizing its North Sea Oil reserves it has delivered to the people of Norway increased benefits that, because of the way the funds were invested, will have a permanent positive impact on Norway for generations.
So I am all for socializing health care insurance and extraction industries. Government control of these industries actually strengthens the capitalist model in those countries that use it.
