G.O.P. Spat Over Web SiteFormer Senator Fred D. Thompson’s presidential campaign sharply criticized a Republican rival, Mitt Romney, yesterday over a derogatory Web site that it believes was created by political operatives for Mr. Romney.
The dust-up over the Web site, PhoneyFred.com, is the first direct clash between the two men, who are jockeying for advantage among the party’s conservative base.
The site was created by Wesley Donehue, a South Carolina political operative who is not an employee of the Romney organization and who created the home page without the knowledge of anyone in the campaign, said Kevin Madden, a spokesman for Mr. Romney.
The Web site, which questioned Mr. Thompson’s conservative credentials and labeled him “Fancy Fred, Five o’Clock Fred, Flip-Flop Fred, McCain Fred, Moron Fred, Playboy Fred,” among other monikers, was taken down Monday after reporters began making inquiries about it to the Romney campaign.
