I still wonder why TV hasn't yet gone big on the internet. Perhaps it would be too convenient to switch windows to check up on news stories, only to find out that TV lied to you.

It's the social control, stupid (not you, mcg, just paraphrasing the old Clinton cliche). It's manufacturing consent. It's controlling the message. It's ignoring anything that doesn't help the rich get richer. It's marginalizing and demonizing any dissenting voices. It's acting as the official PR agency and ministry of propaganda advocating tirelessly for the insanity of the Bushies and the RNC. And so much more.

You'd have to say it's working out pretty well so far. The Murdochization of American media has contributed greatly to the national apathy, subservience, alienation and rapidly growing ranks of the truly stupid.

7. T.V. does mess with your head.

I was just saying that last night. I very seldom watch T.V. But I watched it for an hour last night and came to the conclusion that it does indeed mess with your head.

I found myself feeling all insecure and thinking things like, "Wow. I really do need that miracle anti-aging serum, and some nice lip-plumping gloss, too. And I want a boob job so I can look as good in a low-cut blouse as that actress."

When I realized the kind of thought going through my head, I was kind of shocked. I don't need any of those things.

I already have lots expensive skin-care stuff given to me by uncle who works for a company that makes the stuff, and I don't even use it. The only thing I usually put on my lips is Burt's Bees lip balm. And I would never really want a boob job. (There would be no one to appreciate my fancy new boobs but me, anyway. I'm single and not prone to wearing low-cut blouses.)

T.V. creates artificial wants and insecurities, driving our consumer culture which is destroying our environment and isolating us by making us work long hours to afford things we don't need.

Edited to add: No mystical woo-woo stuff is required for T.V. to affect our thinking. It only requires clever marketing. That's what it's all about, selling stuff.

10. A lot of totally useless boob jobs are done.

As a guy, I say that what might be considered "small" breasts are fine. Actually, more than fine. I've developed more of a European view as I've gotten older. A woman doesn't have to have a particular body shape to be beautiful. Really. In fact, she doesn't have to be physically "beautiful" to be beautiful.

Btw, guys don't care much about women's fingernails, shoes, or purses.

The best thing a person can do for their looks is to work on being physically and mentally healthy. I've seen women who, while not being technically the best looking, are radiant because of their personality and being in shape. In terms of lotions, moisturizers are good, buy I rarely bother, most guys never bother I'd bet.

One thing that bugs me as a guy is the pressure put on women to wear makeup, high heels, and shave various parts of their body. I think men and women have been brainwashed about how women are supposed to look.

Just think, centuries ago, a well off guy was supposed to wear a powdered wig. Around 1900, very plump women were considered the "sexiest". Around the time of Twiggy, very thin was in.

about what effect just watching tv,or computer monitors for that matter,never mind the content,has on the brain.It has long been known that watching flashing lights can trigger changes in the mind.In aviation it is called flicker vertigo.Migraine sufferers can also attest to the ability of flashing lights to set off episodes.Same with epileptics.
Content plays a part though.Madison Ave figured that out a long time ago.What they are doing though is taking advantage of the hypnotic state the TV's put one in.

13. I was just watching a show about "outrageous moments",

they had a section of clips of people falling down, etc. Some of it was really funny.

The reason I started this thread is because I usually don't watch TV, but I've watched it some lately. I saw part of a show, I think it is called "Fear Itself". The episode is about a couple going to a planned community where there is a bit too much interaction between neighbors. A woman talks about "communal living". It gets creepier as it progresses. I don't watch the whole thing so I don't know the ending, maybe something about aliens. I saw a bit if social engineering going on. It seems that the underlying "messages" were ...
. not knowing your neighbors - ok
. getting to know your neighbors - could be bad
. interacting with your neighbors - could be worse
. communal living - bad
. tribal living - bad
. social isolation between households - ok

It's kind of strange that one family often buys something expensive that multiple families could use and it is hardly ever used. I was thinking of buying a chipper/shredder, but a good one costs around $900. Wouldn't it be better if something like that were shared? Not for the manufacturers, but it would be for the environment and those sharing (well, usually).

16. I saw that movie. It seemed to be saying (to me) that

the Christian invasion into peoples' bedrooms (via the legislature) has no good outcome. I know the movie didn't get into religion (because this is Merka and they can't unless it's with a positive spin), but the movie had the couple signing a contract (so they're legally bound as they would be with a ban on abortion or law against homosexuality) and this law had their free will taken away for no good reason except to comply with the leaders of the community (like a religious community).
