I suspect that what Secretary of the Treasury Paulson calls punitive, the rest of
America would call justice. Ordinary Americans want the greedy so-and-sos who caused
this fiasco to be held accountable, just like any of us non-millionaires would be
if we had destroyed a business so catastrophically. Before a single dime of taxpayer
money is spent, I want to know that these hucksters have paid, literally, for their
screw-up.
Their bank accounts should be frozen, including all the offshore accounts where
they have squirreled away cash to avoid paying taxes. Their salaries and bonuses
should be garnished. Their assets—including houses, cars, yachts, and the like—should
be impounded and auctioned off. Once these white collar criminals have been stripped
of all their ill-gotten gains, and the money has gone toward paying down their debts,
then—and only then—should Congress vote to spend taxpayer money on this man-made
disaster.
