7. There were luxuries I was loath to give up when I was poor

One was real maple syrup. I just ate pancakes maybe every couple of months as a treat with the real thing. It just wasn't the same, not even with my chemical free, homemade sugar syrup. It had to be the real thing.

Another was broadband. I'd gotten grandfathered into a cheap connection. Dialup was a few dollars a month cheaper, but not that much cheaper. It was my connection to the rest of the world, my entertainment, my literature, and my music. As I got blinder and my world got smaller, it saved what I laughingly call my sanity.

The last was good shoes, meaning sturdy and well fitting, not fashionable. Taking care of my feet has always been a big deal for me through 25 years of nursing and now that I'm out.

Other than that, if something broke, I fixed it. If it died completely or just plain wore out, I replaced it at a thrift shop or did without.

I don't begrudge people who earned a lot of money their use of it.

I do begrudge people who fuck up the country as a way to earn a lot of money what they've earned. And that doesn't include entertainment celebrities.
