| 11. Reid was a NO vote BUT switched to YES so he can later call the same legislation back to a vote if |
|
necessary. It is procedural. I saw Frist have to do this also.
Reid is NOT a true vote against the legislation.

| 8. That's a procedural move. Learned that when watching the Judicial filibusters |
|
Trent Lott would actually side with those who were looking to filibuster. I probably won't explain it right but it is a procedural move that allows Reid to keep the vote open while trying to get votes converted. At the last minute then he'll switch his votes.

I know there is a name for it. But seeing Reid's name in the "NO" means that this issue isn't dead yet.

| 3. Before people have a hissy fit, theres a reason Reid is with the "NO" |
|
it's a procedural thingie that has a name but it's incase of a filibuster it allows him to keep the vote open while he tries to get more "YES" votes. His final vote will have him switching.
But of the 12 who did not vote - how will they go. All of the "D" lok safe to me, it's the rest that concern me.
I just wish this was after the new senate was on board - this wouldn't be an issue.

I was just typing to explain the same thing, because i knew people were going to have a hissy fit.
What kills me is we might have gotten there if Reid had waited until Kerry got back from the UN conference and Obama hadn't resigned his Senate seat. It's not really Obama's fault though...he figured he would be busy with transition and that it would be better to let Blagojevich appoint a successor quickly who could be there for votes and who would get a leg up on seniority. There's no way he could have known that Blago was instead going to try to sell his Senate seat.

|
He talked about the double standard (AIG v. the Big Three) and he sounded like he was on our side. My guess is that he changed his vote when it seemed like it would not matter, because the idea of the bailout is unpopular and he won by such a narrow margin that he is worried. I bet he would have been with us if his vote would have mattered.

Ugh, I'm so glad i watched all those Judicial filibusters on C-Span. Trent Lott would do the same thing. He would vote with those filibustering as a procedural move to allow him to spend time getting more support for the side voting YES

| 59. Right, that is why the vote is being held open -- because they |
|
need Kerry's vote. Also they need Kennedy's vote. I suspect that Obama might be able to get Hagel to vote for it if he really tried. There are several votes that might possibly get switched. This is not a lost cause. There are a lot of reasons for doing this. John Snow and Dan Quayle are two major ones. They are among the wealthy who have interests in Cerberus Management which owns 51% of GM or GMAC.
This is a bargaining ploy to push the unions down. That is all it is. The big GOP backers will lose a lot of money if GM goes down the tubes. It isn't going to happen. The owners of GM want the company to go into bankruptcy so that they can free it from the pension obligations before Obama takes office. Obama promised to make it so that companies cannot default on pension obligations by going bankrupt and through certain other such maneuvers.

In states like Arkansas and Montana. That's why they voted no, their anti-union constituents. Arkansas led the way in busting unions 20 years ago. You'd think they'd figure out why those same jobs are mostly gone now, but nope. Still at it apparently, don't know why else Lincoln voted against this.

It used to be that the minority opposing closure actually had to hold the floor by presenting interminable speeches continuously until the majority actually gave up. Since there is no other business before the Senate, Reid could keep them there through New Years Day.
Instead, the weasels just give up.

What kills me about this is I think we could have had the votes if we had kept our caucus in line. Biden said he would be there if his vote was needed (I heard he was in DC today just in case) so that would have gotten us to 54...I know Kerry is overseas and I guess Kennedy was not well enough to be there so I'll give them a pass. No idea why Wyden was not there...he could have gotten us to 55. Then if we held the 3 Dems who betrayed us that would have been 58, and I bet at least one of them would have voted differently if it would have been the deciding vote. If members were not so friggin' anxious to go home they could have waited until Kerry got back from his trip to the UN conference, and that would have gotten us to 59, which might have been all we needed, because it's technically 3/5 of all Senators, not 60. With the vacancy in Illinois there are 99 senators, which means 3/5 is 59.4

Had it come down to one vote Reid ikely would have called Kerry to return and had the vote tommorow - what was clear is that Reid earlier thought he had something - but it fell apart.
Biden was in DC and didn't vote - Reid, Dodd, etc all knew they didn't have the numbers.
