Israel stops Gaza attack for three hours

Israel said today it had put on hold military operations in parts of Gaza for three hours to let in aid through a "humanitarian corridor" as Israel welcomed a French and Egyptian proposal to end the fighting.

As Israel's political leaders met in Tel Aviv to decide whether to expand their offensive into built-up areas or consider a ceasefire it was reported in Paris that the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, had brokered a deal. However, an Israeli government spokesman said that while Israel welcomed the proposal , it could accept the deal only if it halted "hostile fire" from Gaza and included measures to prevent Hamas from rearming.
