| 1. You mean the news corps or the government? |
|
Because the government has cared a long time.

the ones who held this criminal situation as a huge foreign policy test for Obama. Will our cable news shows hold us hostage to the next pirate attack like they did for this one?

| 2. Well, since Somalia is still a failed state... |

...I fear there's gonna be a lot more pirates coming from Somalia until some actual stability is restored to that nation. Best-case scenario is some populist democratic movement, but I think we all know that's a slim chance - we're looking at either another ruthless dictator or a further slide into Mad Max territory.

I have a neighbor who is, with his family, a Somali refugee. Just yesterday, he told me sadly that he didn't think he'd ever be able to return. Lots of Somalis in the Twin Cities...each with a sad story. So, I think I'll just continue to care about Somalia.

Nothing to see here, move along. (edit: I'm assuming you were being sarcastic, communicating that the problems of Somalia are NOT diminished by the rescue and that the underlying conditions need to be addressed.)

it reminds me of how we were all suddenly interested in the black church when Rev Wright came around.

| 8. This is a much larger issue than just pirates. |

That country is definitely a failed state. There is no one to enforce laws (and probably no laws to enforce). I know the last time we got involved there it turned out badly so I have no idea what the answer is.
