The basic difference between Republicans and Democrats...

After observing politics from an inside position during the 80's and then, once again, in the late90's and early 00's, I have come to the conclusion that Democrats look at politics as a vocation while Republicans view as a position of avocation.

I know there are a lot of exception to the rule, but I believe that the basic reason the GOP is far more political in the way they approach government is that they have had access to a ton more money than the good guys. Of course Obama has changed that whole equation, but the rule, I believe, still proves true. The GOP also has a much better quasi-governmental organization that serves as a safe landing pad for those who retire or lose an election.

The Democrats are, for the most part, looking at politics as a career. It's their job and so they take the whole thing much more seriously. Take for instance my representative Dennis! He has honed a fine running patronage machine back here on the western side of Cleveland that is probably one of the top ten congressional offices as fare as constituent service is concerned. Politics is his job. That what he has done for the better part of three going on four decades.

I think over the last 30 years or so, the GOP has been able to influence how the districts were drawn to their advantage. The revolution in 1994 was just as much about redrawn districts as the so-called Gingrich revolution.

That also explains why the GOP can act bat shit crazy.
