I have no problem with her or her fame. I do think DU is perhaps going a bit overboard, though. I think that often. I'm called an Obama apologist when I mention that DU has gone obsessive over some non-story involving his administration. That's what she is, an innocent: unvarnished, not pre-packaged, not cunning and shrewd or fake.

A lot of us have gone past the point where we think cynicism and jadedness are the highest achievements in human development. What moved me to tears when I watched Susan Boyle was seeing my own innocence on stage... first ridiculed and dismissed, but then winning over everyone! It's a moving experience. You understand? I think some people do.

12. I think a great deal of the approval is rooted in a mixture of shame and self-identification.

Had she been gorgeous, there would have been nothing to it. People would simply have applauded this fine and obvious talent, and nobody who had not watched would have cared. Yet because she is ungainly, awkward, and unattractive, people expected her to fail. They were ashamed of their prejudice to see her humanity through her considerable talent, they were cheering her against the prejudice others had obviously shown her, and they saw in her all the times they themselves had been discounted without cause. It's not surprising she would be popular.
