| Anyone else here get a Swine Flu vaccine the last time around? In the late 70's? |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 12:08 AM by pnwmom
Days after I stood in line and got my vaccine, several people in my city developed the Gillian-Barre syndrome (which caused paralysis) and they stopped the vaccinations. Those people already vaccinated then had a few weeks to wait before we knew we were in the clear.
Hope they do a better job with a safe vaccine this time.

| 1. I don't remember what flu shot I got, but it was a very long time ago. |
|
It was back in the 70's. I only got ONE and I got the flu that year! Maybe I had it already before the shot...who knows. I have not gotten one since and I only got the flu once since. That's a lot of years. I rarely go out in public anymore, and I'm taking my chances.

| 4. I got it, was in HS at the time |

Remember that it was a big deal in the weeks leading up to it, developing a delivery system so that they could take care of a large number of people. Ended up using a puff of air to blow it under the skin, rather than a needle. It hurt, I would have preferred a needle. But I don't remember anybody in my town of 700,000 getting GBS. (Not sure I would have remembered, though, given my age.)

| 7. My father caught Gillian Barre from that vaccine |
|
Damn near killed him. As it was he spent sixmonths on a respirator in an ICU Ward.He still has numbness in his hands and feet from it. Luckily a nuerosurgeon visiting from Philly recognizeed the symptoms for what they were and was able to initiate a treatment protocol in time. G-B starts off with flu-like symptoms. It then starts to cause numbness and tingling inthe hands and feet which proceeds to move up the arms and legs, eventually causing complete paralysis. In many ways it resembles polio in how it effects the body.Luckily one can recover from it,though, unlike with polio.

| 9. Yeah, I got the swine flu shot back then. |
|
There was so much panic that I decided to get it. I had no side-effects.
I wonder if that old shot will provide any protection against this current flu. I don't even know if it was an H1N1 flu type.

Line up hundreds of people during an outbreak and see how many come down with the flu.

| 15. no--that was a bad experimental vaccine, BTW. |
|
After the vaccines got safer, I skipped a year and got the flu. All 3 of us had it in the house at the same time
It was horrible. I never want to be sick like that again.
And BTW, everybody get a pneumonia vaccine if you can. That will kill you if the flu doesn't.
