BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- An Asian student at Virginia Tech massacred at least 30 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history, cutting down his victims before the university could grasp what was happening, the university president said Tuesday.
The bloodbath ended with the gunman's suicide, bringing the death toll from two separate shootings - first at a dorm, then an engineering building - to 33 and stamping the campus in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains with unspeakable tragedy.
President Bush planned to attend a memorial service Tuesday afternoon at the university, the White House said. Gov. Tim Kaine was flying back to Virginia from Tokyo for the 2 p.m. convocation.
"We do know that he was an Asian male - this is
the second event - an Asian male who was a resident in one of our dormitories.
He was one of our students," University President Charles Steger told CNN Tuesday.
Asked if there could be two shooters, Steger said: "There could be, we don't know," but he said officials don't believe a second shooter is at large.
