Take a holiday from consumerism and putting money into the corporate black hole. Just say no.

I was going to an art show, but I put that off until tomorrow or Sunday.
There's no way I'm going to get trampled by herds of happy shoppers.
In fact, the only place I go for the entire month of December is the supermarket and then only when necessary and at 6 AM if possible.
If I must replace something essential, it has to be on a Tuesday morning. For some reason, even the herds of happy shoppers stay home on Tuesday.

| 4. I will buy nothing today. Culture Jam. |

I first learned about "buy nothing day" in the book: "Culture Jam". Very interesting take on economics and consumerism.

| 5. There are lots of days I buy nothing. Is buying, is buying, is buying? |

If I buy groceries or a paper today, is that buying, is that rampant consumerism? Can I buy those Toys for Tots today or must I wait? (Might be some good deals for the kiddies.)
If I need or want to buy something, I will, and today is no different for me than any other day in that respect but I may go where I can avoid the crowds. I was out working at 3:30 this morning and I could not believe the number of people who were out and about and already in the stores.

"If I need or want to buy something, I will, and today is no different for me than any other day in that respect.."
It boggles my mind that many people have turned this into a sacred ritual....

| 7. I'll do whatever I want and it'll make no difference to anybody |
|
I probably won't buy anything today, because it's no different than any other day.
OTOH, I have to buy a gift for someone's birthday which is today, and my dads which is next week. If I get out, I get out.
It makes no difference to me if I shop today, or tomorrow. It makes no difference to society either way if I do or I don't.
It's just another day.

| 8. This family has made it a point to stay in on Black Friday for years. |
|
For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would want to go shopping on the busiest day of the year, let alone at 4:00 a.m. Only place we are going is to the dog park to exercise the pup.

| 9. Until today, I have NEVER gotten up early for a black Fri sale... |

But my printer/scanner went defunct last week and I've been paying 60 cents per page for printing at kinkos for a big project due M0nday. Yesterday, I budgeted the break even point for purchasing a new printer versus continuing to pay exhorbitant fees at Kinkos, researched possible options and read the reviews on the internet-- and got up this early to get a compact personal laser printer with 32 mb of memory for $89, down from $155 (or $139 lowest price on the web). So, yes, I and about 30 others stood out in front of a Denver Office Supply box store in the cold dark this morning, while there were probably 5 times that many people at Best Buy and the toy stores. Not unpleasant at all. Small crowd, no pushing, no shoving and a polite store manager who came out to greet us and answer questions about any of the "deals" before opening. I wasn't going for the $299 laptop, nor the rock bottom $50 printer and I knew exactly where I needed to go in the store. When they let us in, I made a bee line to the laser printers, grabbed one of only two or that model sitting there--lugged it to the front counter and was out within 5 more minutes...
I got a very very good deal on one of pc magazine's editor's choice personal laser printers and afterwards treated myself to what is now, for me, an extremely rare latte from Starbucks on the way home. Now I'm gonna take a quick nap with my very sleepy pup, who got up this morning at 5 to join me-- waiting patiently in the car for her crazy Mama ;) .
Would I ever go fight the really big crazy crowds for bargains at the more popular stores on a black Friday? Not likely... But, I'm glad I got up this morning... Seems the nerdy types that frequent the Staples,Office Depot, or Office Max types stores are pretty well behaved. LOL
