I'm into Asian music, so I frequent forums where there are a lot of young Asian people, including many Japanese-Americans. They use the shorthand "jap" to mean "Japanese", like "jap version of that CD", or whatever.
I'm white, and I cringe when I see this, and have often commented on how that's really insulting, and would prefer to see the abbreviation I use, "Jpn".
They have no problem with the words "jap" or "nip", which completely boggles my mind. Amazing how the only person on these forums who gets offended by these terms is me.
It's like WWII never happened. Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted that our countries aren't feuding, and that we're pretty much allies now. But I do think that offensive terms should remain offensive, you know? :(

| 11. Actually, the headline was probably written by someone of that age. |
|
Said person, if you pointed to it and said "How could you do this??" would say "How could I do what?"
"How could you put 'nips' in a headline about Japan?"
"Why not? 'Nips'--it means "just barely beats,' right? Just barely outpoints, right?"
"Uh, yeah. But it can also be taken as an ethnic slur."
"It can?"
"Yeah. Against Japanese people."
"Oh. Really?"
"You've never heard of the term 'Nipponese' before?"
"No."
*sigh* "Do you know that during World War II, Americans used to say 'Jap' and 'Nip' as a derogatory term for the Japanese enemy?"
"No...not really...I mean, like, that was like soooooo long ago. Like, even before my grandparents' time."
"Oh."
