I am thinking about getting one for local travel about 85% of my travel is within 10 miles (one way) of my home. The remaining 15% is about 15-20 miles. The dealer estimates the cost at about $.02 per mile as opposed to about $.28 per mile for car.

The bad news is that the tax credit for electric vehicles expired on Dec. 31, 2006 as well as the accelerated depreciation schedule for vehicles used in business.

Any feed back would be appreciated....

1. Eek. Don't run into anything, particularly an SUV.

They'd have to pull you out of that thing with a spoon and a spatula.

2. That's a real concern in most places

I have seen those Smart Cars. I don't think they will every be a good idea here except in very congested cities and maybe that's good enough. But for the same reason I would never ride a scooter, I would never buy a very small car like those.

I would need about twice that or I would get run over on my way to and from work.

4. In Seattle they can only be driven on roads

where the speed limit is 35 MPH or less. Which for me excludes Aurora Ave (40+ MPH) and the freeway. The speed limit on unposted roads is 35 MPH.

I bet they could be tweaked to double that, if type-certification wasn't an issue.
