Also, if you remember, Obama stated when he went down there that BP had not fully disclosed the extent of the problem at the beginning.

Apparently, there have been other small oil leaks that were quickly stopped. This well was not yet fully in operation as I understand it. It wasn't producing yet. It was being closed up so that it could be used later. That's what I understand.

The Coast Guard may not have properly advised the administration also. I read that in exercises in the Gulf which are held every few years, there was a problem in the command structure somehow -- another legacy of the sloppy Bush administration that the Obama administration has not yet dealt with.

Fixing oil leaks is not the first priority that Obama had on his table -- and for good reason.
The last big leak like this was in the 1960s as I understand it. The source of the Exxon Valdez mess was entirely different.

Besides, if you set fire to your apartment, you have to try to put it out. If you can't you have to call the fire department, and if the apartment is damaged either your renters' insurance or you personally will have to pay -- unless the fire was your landlord's fault. Let's say the fire was due to faulty electrical wiring for which your landlord was responsible under the lease -- then the landlord pays.

Here, the U.S. government cannot possibly have been at fault. That is why Perry of Texas was trying to claim this was an Act of God. If it wasn't then one or more of the three companies that put up the rig, managed it and maintained it is or are responsible. The U.S. government has a duty to help out because that is the law. But then so does your local fire department if your apartment catches on fire. If you call the fire department and tell them you have a tiny fire in an ashtray but you are handling it, they will not send three trucks. If you tell them the truth -- that your whole place is going up in flames -- the fire department will come in full force.

Don't blame Obama for this one. This is totally the BP triumvirate's responsibility. One or more of those companies, probably all of them, is or are responsible.

Yes -- I have no clue what the boats were doing or why they were even there?

Somehow, they managed along a great length of NJ coastline and more to suction up sand

from offshore and feed it back onto shore from huge funnels -- this has been going on

for a decade or more in beach recovery programs -- hugely costly and insane, but none

the less still going on.

You can certainly suction oil out of a car's gas tank --

Something like this should have been begun long ago -- 23 days later now!

Tankers could have come out, picked this stuff up and unloaded it at some central point/

refinery/??

Outrageous that the only thought that has been given to deal with the stuff pouring out

is to BURN it or throw questionable chemicals on it to disperse it, creating more damage!!

All of this makes very clear how unprepared and irresponsible people involved in this really

Not heavy crude. I know they have big ones at refineries and power plants.

But it sounds like what you'd like to do would require a big, purpose-built tanker with a huge separation capacity.

Huge ships were involved -- as explained to me worked like a spatula picking up sand

from ocean bottom probably 50 feet - maybe 150 feet -- from beach.

As it was picked up -- and obviously, they would have been picking up water, as well,

it was funneled back onto the beach. Exactly how it was done I don't know. Whether two

boats were working together, or whether they had separate roles.

However, it was WET SAND which came back onto the beach. Possibly they didn't try to

separate the water from the sand. In fact, as I think about it, probably the case.

But a huge project -- hugely expensive.

Obviously there are a lot of tankers around and they hold a lot of oil --

It's probably grasping at straws, but I'm been wondering why something like this wasn't

tried.

That leak is at 5000 ft. Experience from prior bottom spills shows that a significant proportion of the crude petroleum, probably MOST of it, does not reach the surface quickly, or ever. Instead, it stabilizes in an emulsion at depth in a plume that's distributed by water currents. THAT oil is probably far more dangerous to sea life than the oil on the surface. There's probably many times more of it than the oil visible on the surface. That surface slick is something like 2000 square miles now-- if that's just a fraction of what's spreading at depth, then large portions of the Gulf and possibly the Atlantic will die.

Not a corporate emergency. Not that of a few states or even the gulf. Not even a national emergency. Every available navy, should be involved in containment efforts. Every available engineer, including the worlds largest weapons manufacturer, GE, should be trying to figure out a mechanical solution. Every scientist, including those in Switzerland looking for black holes, need to get involved. Drop whatever they are doing if it's not an urgent priority. If it's not more urgent than this, which it likely is not. No holds barred, no expense spared (BP and Haliburton will ultimately pay for any and all expenses for those involved, but lets get this solved first). I know BP did it, I know the coast guard is the government hand in the clean-up, and they are 'working on it' but it is not enough. Everyone who has a voice needs to cry out for the need for the entire world to work together.

Let the UN, if it's actually good for anything, be the central planner for this effort. Even at the low estimate of 200,000 gallons a day, if that were true. Even just one day adds immeasurable damage to the world's future in fishing and marine life. I don't know exactly how all of the above will figure out how to stop this, and clean it up in a non-toxic way. I only know if they all work together, they can. If they wait until the oil is washing onto Europe's shores (it's just a matter of time) should it be as bad as they say it could be (a million gallons a day) and it does take the 3 months for BP to stop this, it will be too late. Rather than get mad at corporate corner-cutting that allows these disasters, in an under-enforced, under-regulated market, this has to be the focus of our demands. Economic crisis or not, the world can't afford NOT to get involved. RIGHT NOW!
