Gordon Brown has announced he is resigning as UK prime minister.

Mr Brown has officially tendered his resignation to the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and recommended Conservative leader David Cameron succeed him.

Speaking alongside his wife Sarah outside No 10 Downing Street, he said the job had been "a privilege" and wished his successor well.

Mr Brown is also stepping down as Labour leader and as an MP with immediate effect.

His decision comes as the Tories and Liberal Democrats are poised to agree a deal to form a government.

The Liberals have sat around propping up the Conservative government time after time before this last year. They had every opportunity to force and election but they chose not to. The outcome hasn't exactly been an epic disaster.

5. Such a marriage of convenience isn't going to last long

and will break down as soon as one party stonewalls the other's first pet project.

Either Labour will have to go back to being Labour instead of Tory Lite or the Lib Dems will remain in the catbird seat, holding power over whichever conservative party forms the coalition with them.

arrange a referendum on Proportional Representation and then send out all his party operatives to campaign against it. The alliance won't last one year.

I don't know if this is a coalition - maybe a minority government.

OK he intends to form a coalition with LibDems.
Wife is rather pregnant - British Prime Ministers do love having babies at #10.
