I'll never forget seeing him live. Front row, dead center in the Georgetown University gymnasium in the late 70s. Truly amazing show!

Actually I came close to being on the road with him. We were booked to do sound for the east coast part of a tour with Sly and the Family Stone & Bob Marley. I guess Sly and Bob didn't get along and Marley bailed out. We did do the Sly tour, but I was pretty bummed that Bob Marley wasn't there.

7. Still the best concert I've ever seen, at Berkeley Community Theater...

...and I guess the reason is that nothing on Bob's CDs can even remotely prepare you for what the man was like on stage. From the minute he walked on to the minute he walked off, the band "flatlined" at ten on a ten scale. There were no peaks and valleys, no highs or lows. Bob grabbed you by the neck in the first 60 seconds and didn't let go for the next hour and a half. I've never seen such sustained intensity in my life. It didn't matter if the song was more of a "ballad," like "No Woman No Cry," or the thoroughly brutal "Get Up, Stand Up" that closed the show. Bob plugged in his guitar as well as HIMSELF...he connected, he exploded.

And there is no CD or DVD that adequately conveys what it was like to witness it in the flesh.

21. That long ago!?! Oh, I'm so old... I saw him live FOUR TIMES!

It was so long ago I can't really remember how I first got into his music, but get into it I did. Totally.

And every single time he came to my city I got tickets and went. And every time I dragged more friends with me, telling them that they just HAD to see this man and hear his music. And the friends I dragged with me always left in awe and grateful that I had insisted they go.

All four times I saw him it was a transcendental experience. Of course, one always got heavily stoned ahead of time (and during). And there we would be, taken completely out of ourselves, flying on the music -- our souls swimming and floating and flowing on sonic waves outside of all material bonds of space and time...

I remember how utterly mesmerized I always felt -- he always kept his eyes closed, song after song. And then, just for a nano-second, his eyes might open -- so fast you would miss it if you weren't watching intently -- but his eyes would open for just that tiny moment in time...

And there was the Heart of the Universe, the Glance of the Divine, the Light of a Thousand Suns -- just for a moment -- beaming out like a laser.

Oh, yeah. I remember Bob Marley...

and found my copy of the issue of Rolling Stone covering the death of Elvis Presley. Started thumbing through it, and the first page I opened to was their "random notes" on page 32. It has a picture of Marley kicking a soccer ball, and the following text is from the last of the three paragraphs of the blurb about him:
"Marley has delayed his American tour to have a growth removed from his toe. The growth resulted from a bone infection incurred after a soccer injury. Marley is now recovering nicely, though he had delayed the operation for some time. "
