It isn't just about this, but about showing more of the results of the war they condone, Americans that is. Clearly Americans are getting off way too easy, not hearing and seeing the handiwork of their terrible decisions to go to war.
This was a particularly bad case, where they were so far away and shooting into a crowd of unarmed people, but just war itself is so sanitized these days. Back in Vietnam, at least we occasionally saw a wounded person, and we'd hear the consequences of our own soldiers.
These days if you hear anything, it's the "glorified soldier" tale.

|
Helicopter shooting up 20 civilians.
You know, everyone who runs is a terrorist. Everyone who stands still is a well-disciplined terrorist.
Post also says Obama wants to prosecute twice as many cases as Bush and previous presidents combined, the article was entitled "deep anger over disclosures" meaning Obama views whistleblowers (like my late father) as criminals. and the Post dryly notes that Democrats would have probably strung Bush up for the same actions.

|
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 11:17 AM by Leopolds Ghost
A family member of mine spent the last 10-15 years of his life whistleblowing against MMS and royalty-gate, the theft of billions of dollars in oil royalties from Indian tribes and the Department of Interior (which runs both MMS and Indian Affairs) willfully and publically defying (under Clinton and Bush) a contempt of court ruling by a federal judge in a $6 billion dollar verdict, followed by subsequent sex and bribery allegations driven by MMS' long association as a farm league for the oil industry, a subject that most Dems are only now hearing about. He didn't get anywhere with fellow dems on the subject, when he was alive.

I worry, because we just recently released an Australian man who was said to be a terrorist--we rendered him right off the street! and held him, I think, about 4 years over the Al Qaeda threat. So this poor guy is really risking his life and freedom to deliver the truth. He could be disappeared at any moment.

There are an awful lot of clarifiers here in this OP.
What violation of campaign promises are happening? There is a soldier being held in Kuwait. I know the story, but I think this is REALLY jumping the gun.
No charges have been filed. Not on the soldier, nor for the founder of Wikileaks.
I have no problem with WikiLeaks, but I have a problem with the premise of this OP. There are an AWFUL lot of assumptions being made here.

| 16. I was about nine years old when the Pentagon Papers were released. |
|
My father was an editor at the New York Times, and although he didn't do any of the editing on that, he did cover for the guys who were holed up in a hotel room who did do the editing.
Shortly after the Times started printing it, the FBI came to our house. My parents had me present in the room, and I suppose it was to show them that my father was a nice, family guy. The Feds asked questions, and I don't think my father said much of anything. I thought it was SO cool!
As I got older, and came to understand what Ellsberg and Sheehan and the Times had done, my thinking was always "well OF COURSE they did the right thing!" Maybe it was partially my upbringing, partially my nature. I will always root for honesty and transparency and justice.
I watched the "Wikileaks Video" of the helicopter shortly after it came out, and I thought "this is the Pentagon Papers of this war." I don't know what else they have, but I hope it's good, and I hope it makes a difference...

I do agree that the founder of Wikileaks is a hero, I do agree that if there is proof in exposing those classified documents that there is proof of actual crimes by elected officials or proof of warcrimes from say our former elected officials or crimes against humanity should NOT be punishable by law, and I do also agree that Obama is violating his campaign promise of government transparency if he allows this guy to be prosecuted or killed. I further believe that those that are exposed should be prosecuted because nobody should be above the law... especially elected officials! I also think that Mr. Obama has violated a lot of campaign promises and I am now 'hopeless'. I strongly felt that if anyone could've changed this country... it would've been him. However, I have seen nothing but the major issues I supported him on... not change at all and in some instances - they've gotten worse.
But, I come to realize and accept more and more that we really don't have a say anyway because our country is no longer a democracy and hasn't been for a long while now. It is all a delusion now.
So... I 'try' not to read my news websites (obviously that's not working out too well for me) and live my life not thinking about all the corruption going on because I know that unless every single American unites as one and fights to take our country back - there is NO HOPE. Simply electing someone who currently is in government is useless. Nobody - democrat NOR republican really does a thing for the people... it's all about the almighty dollar and power now. And even if we get Alan Grayson in there (who actually IS on our side right now)... "they" (whoever 'they' are) will show him the way and he will turn out just like Obama anyway.
So... I vote to repeal the 22nd Amendment and bring back Bill. At least he can get us out of debt and take care of our environment the way it should be... and he was gonna take care of health care.
And... I myself, do not know specifically who "they" are, but 'they' are the same people George Carlin used to 'teach' about, but nobody really took him to be serious because he was a comedian. And so... Americans still don't and never will really get it.
So... live in the moment - enjoy your life in the moment - spend time with family and friends doing fun things and bonding and try to stop thinking about all these things we cannot change. :grouphug:

|
If it is true that 80 % of the oil that BP normally pulls out of the Gulf is destined for the military, then maybe that is why Obama didn't speak out about the falsification of the numbers of barrels that were ending up in the Gulf rather than in the gas pumps at some military installation.
And probably, any catastrophe related to oil canbe explained to a sitting President as a matter of "National Security."

|
so oil does become a "national security" issue for MIC -- intelligence.
Did you ever see the movie "3 Days of the Condor" -- think that's the name of
it. Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway -- great movie. Sad, but great.
Think it was based on a book -- maybe "60 Days of the Condor"??
I always mean to look it up, but forget.
Re Obama -- to tell you the truth I don't know what the hell is going thru his mind --
especially with Rahm have such access to him.
I don't know what was more shocking -- his comment: "Oil rigs these days don't spill"
or his new one: "The Gulf will bounce back"!!

..just before the start of the war in Iraq and he paid homage to the many leakers at the time that were providing documents and info against the Bush/Cheney Corp's "intelligence" releases and propaganda for going to war. He called for other Americans to do what is morally right in the face of potentially life-shattering consequences and release docs if they contradicted the government's assertions. The Wikileaks site is now providing just such information to the American people, much more than our shit traditional news, he is a hero. Unfortunately and wrongly he's been targeted by the "Justice" Department. What happened to the change we worked and voted for??? Meet the new boss...

Thank god we still have men who do not cave to these raving lunatics. This country has been taken over by Dr. Strangelove clones.

| 107. K&R: My guess is he'll be arrested and renditioned. |
|
Wikilinks hasn't only offended the US, it has exposed secret corruption and abuse of power in other governments as well. My guess is the US will do the arresting and then have the founder formerly extradited to the country with the least respect for human rights. This will be done with all appearance of legality. Meanwhile, Faux and other propaganda outlets will turn up the agiprop against the guy to make him a universal criminal.
You see, they might just do all this "in secret," but to do that would be to assure that something else like wikilinks rises from the ashes. Instead, they want the person treated as painfully as possible with the supposed sanction of law and want him renounced universally, so they will orchestrate these for the appearance.

Our govt. is run by a criminal enterprise. Obama may have gotten his marching orders, or he may have signed on willingly, I don't know.
Nevertheless, someone needs to "out" the U.S. for it's crimes.
Good for Wikileaks!!

|
Wikileaks is a Hero because I hold a belief that a democracy cannot exist that is not willing to do whatever it does without the greatest degree of openness possible. We elect people to office and place our trust in them. Wikileaks acting as a Press keeps those leaders in line by exposing the action of those leaders.

If one of those documents details some cozy ties with Israel, the neocons or Mossad will just shoot him.

K&R If our government had a chance to kill this guy before all of this publicity, I believe they would have..........our government (unfortunately) cannot be trusted to do what it right and often, secretly does what is wrong at the expense of we the people while protecting them, the corporate people and military machine. What a messed up game this is and we have no choice but to play. I guess in the end it's all about how you play this game.
