Crocheters -- Can you help with this crochet pattern?

In fact, does anyone want to do a Crochet-a-Long (CAL)?? The knitting blogosphere is forever having KALs (Knitalongs), and I don't know if crocheters online do that, but if anyone else wanted to join me in this, it might be fun.

I just love these slippers, and WANT some. And wouldn't they make lovely gifts? The first one I ever saw was done in white, with a Dr. Scholl's insole inserted having been covered in a sweet pink rosebud print. Precious, they were. And I think this version is cool, too, tho I'd choose different colors, probably. What a great way to use up small amounts of leftover yarn.

Anyone interested?

The "problem" I have with this pattern is this -- I can understand the first half of the directions (the sole) but I don't see where there's any directions for the sides of the slipper. Is the sole just overbig, and then you add the crosswise top (over the toes), and then single crochet the edging to pull it tight enough to stay on? I don't get it.

1. The trick is to stop increasing

which is what makes the piece lie flat. The sides will come up as you crochet. If you want a more definitive ridge, do your dc on the first round where you stop increasing in the back loop of the previous row only then in both loops in consecutive rows. This will make the wrong side of the sole the inside of the slipper.

...after you get the sole to fit your foot you stop increasing and that builds up the sides.

but I wouldn't be able to start for a few weeks. I have a two wraps and a shrug to finish before my daughter's wedding in two weeks. YIKES!

11. You know, almost any publication these days has the basics

Vogue Knitting magazine, even. But there are also Crochet magazines on the market now, and lots and lots of cool new books. I'd be hard-pressed to recommend any particular book, personally, but go have a look yourself and see what strikes you.

13. I'll have to show my ignorance and ask: What is a crochet-a-long?

I love to crochet, but I don't know anyone else who does it. My favorite thing to crochet is afghans. I think every family member and friend has at least one by now and most of them have more. My grandaughter is 18 and still uses the one I made before she was born as a throw. I especially like baby afghans. The colors are great, they work up quickly and few things are cuddlier.

15. I'm sorry I didn't see your post til now --

A crochet-a-long would be several of us getting together online, in a thread here for example, and deciding to crochet the same item together, discussing it and perhaps asking questions, and posting photos and stuff. We all try to start about the same time (laggers are always welcome), the yarns we choose are all different of course. Knitters do it all the time (KALs or Knit-a-longs). It's fun.

We're starting March 1, right? I finished the wraps for my daughter's wedding this weekend (and now it looks like it will be 74 degrees!) but I won't have much time to crochet until after the first. But maybe we can get some more interest.

I'm going to need the slippers, too, because our newest dog (number five) chewed up my Uggs! :(
