Clay - how do you make a Skinner blend?

OK, I took the plunge and bought a pasta machine and clay. Hooray for those 40% off coupons from Michaels!

Many of the projects I've looked at require you to make a Skinner blend out of two colors. Does anyone have a good description of how to do that? The directions in the craft book I have are pretty hard to follow.
