| argh! Sony TV less than 18 months old is gonna cost us a bunch |
|
we paid over $2000 for a TV in July of 06
it's started showing a band of red and yellow 'fog' at the top of the screen so I jump on the internet
seems it's a known problem with their "Optical Block" which (as far as I can figure out) is what projects the colors on the screen to make the picture on the LCD
so if you are considering a rear projection Sony LCD TV, RUN don't walk the other way........
We're in the process of fighting it out with Sony to cover the costs of repair, but if the stories on the internet are any indication, that will only buy us a couple more years (maybe) of service until it starts again.
I guess we'll be spending the 'stimulus' check after all on a new TV

| 1. Get a DLP set next time, you'll like it |

No screen door effect, higher contrast ratio, no possibility of screen burn or dead pixels, and feather-light. My 50" Samsung 1080p set ($1500 sticker price last year) weighs around sixty pounds. The two drawbacks on mine involve the halogen lamp, which can a) burn out and b) cause the set to protect itself by shutting off if it gets too hot in the cabinet. The new DLP sets use a white LED array, so they don't face those issues and the lamp lasts a long long time by comparison.
You can't hang them on a wall, though. But they do produce a gorgeous picture...

I tried to email Sony yesterday (wanted to put it in writing) the only email on Sony's site was to tech support
he popped it back telling me to call the hotline (for the 5th time!) I asked for a email or address to send the letter, he politely declined to give the info and sent me back to the 800#
