South American Gas Pipeline unviable in the short term

Given the global financial crisis, the Gas Pipeline of the South, which is to link Brazil, Venezuela, and Argentina, will not be completed in the short term, said on Thursday Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.

The cost of the pipeline, promoted by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, is estimated at more than USD 20 billion, Reuters said.

"I do believe the gas pipeline is viable, but there are not funds available because of the crisis. Major projects will have to wait," Amorim told reporters.

The countries involved in the project held a number of meetings and conducted preliminary surveys to begin the works.
