Ecuador, Colombia to fully restore diplomatic ties in 2011: official

Ecuador and Colombia will completely restore their diplomatic relations in January 2011, depending on the solution of sensitive issues, an Ecuadorian official said on Tuesday.

The solution of the sensitive issues between both countries could help normalize ties between the two neighbors at the end of this year or the beginning of 2011, said Ecuadorian Vice Foreign Minister Kintto Lucas.

On Thursday, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino and his Colombian counterpart Maria Angela Holguin are expected to meet to discuss the progress in this regard.

Quito is still waiting for a new copy of "the hard discs" seized during an operation carried out in March 2008 by the Colombian army against a camp of its Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels in Ecuador.
