'Juan of the Dead' fends off zombies in Cuba

Havana, Cuba (CNN) -- An eerie silence hangs over Havana's main sea-front avenue as smoke drifts out of a lone abandoned car.

Suddenly, dozens of bloodied figures lurch into view, some with empty eye sockets, others dragging limbs behind them.

It's another day on location for "Juan of the Dead," Cuba's first zombie movie, a mix of camp gore and wry satire.

In this version, the communist government blames the zombie invasion on U.S.-backed dissidents intent on destabilizing the country.

1. The Cuban sense of humor can be a little inexplicable to a non-Cuban

so I really wonder how this will go over, but Zombies and Cuba sound pretty entertaining.

2. It helps if you understand Spanish, of course

Some of the jokes are pretty funny, but they're lost in translation. Plus you have to know a bit about life in Cuba. I remember a long time ago they had a really funny movie about a guy who died, but his ration card was lost, so the family couldn't bury him, and the son ran around with the corpse on a wheelbarrow trying to sneak the corpse into the cemetery to bury him.

3. Was there a huge traffic jam, at some point, with people fighting in the street with one another?

I've heard about that one, if it's the same.

The account of the movie I read about long ago seemed very funny.
