Julio Alberto Poch, the alleged death flights pilot who was arrested at Valencia Airport in September last year and then extradited to Spain, has been released by an Argentinean federal court. According to sources quoted by the EFE news agency, the court also ordered that the investigation be broadened to determine Poch’s legal situation.
It comes after the court dismissed a lower court’s case against Poch this October, on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence to link him with the events under investigation.
Now 57 years old, he is alleged to have been involved as a pilot for the notorious secret detention centre, the ESMA Navy School, during Argentina’s military dictatorship. He was under investigation for the disappearance of the two French nuns, Alice Domon and Leonie Duquet, the journalist, Rodolfo Walsh, and the Swedish woman, Dagmar Hagelin.
Julio Alberto Poch was working as a pilot for the Dutch low-cost airline, Transavia, when, at the request of Buenos Aires, he was arrested in Valencia during a stopover before flying back to Amsterdam. He has held dual Argentine-Dutch nationality since 1995.
