BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Argentina is sniping at the U.S. State Department's annual drug report, saying criticism is hard to accept from a country that leads the world in illegal drug consumption.
The annual report says Argentina has become South America's second-largest cocaine consumer after Brazil, and that 70 tons of cocaine flowed through Argentina to Europe last year. It urged Argentina to do more to enforce its borders with Bolivia and Paraguay.
Cabinet chief Anibal Fernandez says that 90 per cent of the 600 tons of cocaine produced in Colombia and Peru each year goes to the United States.
Fernandez acknowledged that Argentines consume cocaine, but also said Friday that the country has been seizing more illegal drugs.
