34. Very unlikely, but I suppose in the absolute WORST case scenario

(ie., that the volcanic ash spews thickly enough and for long enough to affect European agriculture) then yes, there could be a collapse of the European economy. Of course, that would be great for certain parts of *our* economy (there would suddenly be enormous demand for imported produce, and I'm sure our farmers would try to get in on some of that action) but it could also mean a rise in prices for American produce. After all, we'd be competing against European buyers for some of our produce.

Of course, all of this is HIGHLY unlikely. The current eruption really isn't big enough to do much damage. But if another one erupts at the same time, or if this one suddenly gets REALLY powerful, then maybe...maybe...we'd have a problem. And even then, not likely.

Either way, there's not much we can do about it. Mother nature is notoriously unpredictable about these things.

Maybe we could use boats to lay cable across the oceans, and send messages that way? We could send a lot of messages over the wire with maybe some simple encoding, maybe long and short pauses between electric clicks?
