BOSTON — Sen. Scott Brown says he can’t at the moment support a repeal of the military’s "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy that bans gays from serving openly in the military.

Brown said Tuesday it would be premature to repeal the law ahead of a Pentagon report on the policy due in December.

The Massachusetts Republican said in a statement that he was keeping an open mind, but can’t support moving ahead until he was confident that repealing the ban won’t jeopardize the military’s mission. Brown is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.


The White House and gay rights groups support a bill that would repeal the ban but also allow the Pentagon to continue its review of how to implement the new policy.

Congress could take up the bill as early as Thursday.

"I am keeping an open mind, but I do not support moving ahead until I am able to finish my review, the Pentagon completes its study, and we can be assured that a new policy can be implemented without jeopardizing the mission of our military," Brown said in a statement provided to the Globe.

12. No, he did not. He just voted yes on a few issues he knew he could not

avoid voting yes to have a chance of being reelected.

In addition, his YES vote on the financial bill was a way to make sure that the bill would not be better or at least that the Senate would not vote on GOOD amendment.

As for being socially moderate, it is hard to know why people here give him so much credit. He is not, by any mean. By MA standards, he is a RWer, so it is no surprise to find him straddling the same line as Ben Nelson or Jim Webb. He is just an opportunist who, a few months ago, was considered to be a social conservative until he understood that would not get him elected and now finds that using this type of language (keeping an open mind, wait until the study is completed, ...) allows him to pay his dues to the freepers without looking too bigoted.

"These things take time" - "Slow down" - Do it gradually"....just like the piece by piece health insurance "reform" the GOP wanted - let's start again from the beginning to make sure everything is right.

It is bullshit - delay forever while saying "someday, but not yet..."
