So I gather you are moving to Atlanta? 'Lived there on three separate occasions in my life... There are pros and cons, (among them the politics), but hey you'll be sharing the city with some great DUers, including our famous Catwoman!

Druid Hills, Inman Park, Midtown, Va-Highlands, Candler Park, East Atlanta... That isn't old time Georgia - lots of progressives and transplants like yourself. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

You're right, this is a great area to live with many progressives and left-leaning folks. The OP (and, by extension, my neighbors and myself) certainly do not need to be pitied for living here.
Hi, neighbor! :hi:

I'm not loving GA, but I know there are good folks here. Sounds like your neighborhood might be a little liberal-friendlier than mine. :hi:
Of course, my own Dad had a big McCain/Palin sign in the yard when we moved here (but I had my NC for Obama shirt on). Living with a RW'er does color your impression a bit. ;)

There are people here who are narrow-minded and misogynistic. Some of them are quite influential. But there are others who are not like that. There are friendly people who would do anything for you. The area is beautiful, too.
Do what you can to change things. Find like-minded people. Find the good where you are. It is hard for me, too, because I have been beaten down a few times. But I know you will find a way to make it livable for yourself, and to contribute.
p.s. Manzullo is my Congressman. It doesn't get much worse than that!

You'll be voting Dem, and I'm sure there are others. It's got to be frustrating, I know. I lived in a RED, RED, RED state for several years, and it almost made me gag. Nonetheless, there WILL be other liberals to commiserate with, and perhaps you can start to change things down there! Good luck!

Edited to add: If you live and breathe only state and local politics 24/7/365, then yes, you will likely be frustrated by much here (although Atlanta is a welcome island of blue in a big sea of red). However, if you can open your mind and understand that Georgia might have something other than that, you just might find that there is a lot to love about living here. This really is a beautiful area of the country, IMHO, and Atlanta is a fantastic city. But based on the tone of your OP, it seems you have already made up your mind that my city and my state have nothing to offer you other than their respective elected officials.
And in that, I do pity you.

Georgia ain't that bad. Take it from one who knows...how to get by as an antagonist in deep red suburban Atlanta. As long as you stick to "Inside the Perimeter" (ITP), you'll be fine.
Generally good folks down here regardless of their politics. Welcome. :hi:

I suppose you'll be living in Dekalb county. The whole metro area is HUGE. There are zillions of mexican and Central American immigrants. Mexican restaurants are seriously over-represented and Southern cuisine is disappearing. There are many good groceries, including Dekalb Farmer's market.
ATL area isn't particularly Southern. Thus it's not particularly soulful. There are nice people everywhere, though.

It is beautiful, but the sheer number of Palinites is just disturbing, even with people that should be intelligent enough to know better.

But Georgia itself is a horrible state. The liberal city of Atlanta is held hostage by small minds from Georgia's numerous rural counties.
But you can't judge the people by the backward state politics. Great folks abound here.

that's Cynthia McKinney's old district BTW. He's a pretty rank and file Democrat and votes with the majority about 95% of the time even if he does say stupid things.
Current conventional wisdom is that he'll have a tough time getting re-elected though due a well-funded challenger and an influx of Republican voters in the district. So you can help...
