The Republican National Committee is trying to set up meetings between Chairman Michael Steele and foreign ambassadors to the United States, according to an email obtained by POLITICO – an effort that has puzzled diplomats as well as fellow Republicans.

An RNC intern sent a message late last month to at least one ambassador on behalf of Neil Alpert, a senior finance aide, with little explanation.

“As you know, the November election is just 103 days away and the Chairman would like to extend to you an invitation to sit down either at the RNC or at your embassy to discuss the upcoming 2010 midterm elections,” wrote Christopher Kelleher, a finance department intern. “With literally hundreds of congressional seats up for grabs in just under four months, Chairman Steel would love to have the opportunity to discuss the Party's outlook with you.”

RNC spokesman Doug Heye declined to comment on why Steele would want to set up individual meetings with the foreign diplomats, whether he’s had any meetings with them, and whether if he would continue to pursue such get-togethers.

8. You'd think he'd have learned his lesson after the GOP attacked Obama over something similar to this

Anyone remember during the 2008, before he was president, how the GOP criticized Obama because at one of his fund raising events he let a foreign diplomat attend it? Obama made clear that the diplomat had gotten in free (it would violate campaign finance laws to accept money from foreigners), but people attacked him, and the diplomat because diplomats aren't supposed to get themselves into a situation of 'endorsing' one candidate, as what if that person loses the election and the guy they pissed off by getting close to them won the election? That would make the diplomat's job much more difficult, perhaps impossible even.

For the record, that diplomat defended his attending Obama's event, and said he'd take the same opportunity to attend other presidential candidate's events, like McCain/Hillary, in order to get the opportunity to meet the people who he would work with next year. I'm not sure if he attended a Hillary or McCain event at a later time though.

Now, compare this to what Steele's doing, sure with Obama's situation you could say "I'm just meeting people I might be working with soon", but there's not really a way out for those diplomats with Steele's invitation to 'discuss' the GOP's 'outlook' in the many seats up for grabs.

If teh invitation was from Chairman Steel (without teh final "e"), then it must have come from Robert K Steel, Chairman of teh Aspen Institute Board of Trustees. Clearly had nothing to do with that other Steele.

During the 2008 election, the RW Talking Rectums were all asplutter over Obama's alleged violation of that Logan Act. Although seemingly "plausible", Obama was then a declare candidate for Presidency. But the fucking RNC?
