Obama campaigned on reducing the troop levels in Iraq and increasing them in Afghanistan. The Bush administration negotiated a drawdown in troop levels in Iraq, which Obama has continued on schedule. A hypothetical President McCain would have had to reduce Iraq troop levels at the same rate (or renegotiate a status of forces agreement -- long odds with the current Iraqi government). Bush showed no inclination to increase troop levels in Afghanistan; this is in fact a difference between Obama and Bush, and one that Obama campaigned on. I totally understand antiwar people protesting the increase in Afghanistan, but this is one thing that nobody can conceivably call a "betrayal", since he's done exactly what he said he would in Afghanistan, and exactly what Bush negotiated we had to do in Iraq.

He's trying to close Gitmo except he has so much opposition.

He's commander in chief of the armed forces; he could hand Gitmo back to Raul tomorrow if he wanted to. I totally dig the "he doesn't have a magic wand" point on a lot of things, but on where military detainees are kept he actually does have the closest thing on earth to a magic wand. He could put them on a brig ship in the middle of the Atlantic. He could put them in Leavenworth. He could put them on Diego Garcia. It is clearly and without question in his power to stop holding detainees in Gitmo, and he has chosen not to do that, despite promising in the campaign he would.

That remains to be seen, since we haven't had a big enough majority yet. As it is, we ended up with a plan written 15 years ago by the American Enterprise Institute.

To the extent there is an argument that "Obama is Bush", it's about continuing some very specific and dangerous precedents set by Bush: warrantless surveillance, renditions, assassinations of US citizens, etc.

So, if what you care about (and admit it or not, we all do have "majors" here) is civil liberties and the curtailment of executive power, then there is something of that argument there.

We're in the middle of a party realignment in the US (we have one every 40 years or so) so a lot of things aren't going to line up with old labels. I think Obama is closing out a long line of conservative Presidents, a lot like how Nixon closed out a long line of liberal Presidents.

I supported this President during the primaries and beyond. We had the perfect chance to roll back most of the worst excesses of the Bush Administration, and it was squandered. No, I don't blame the President alone in this, but he has been complicit.

We could be out of Iraq by now. We could be out of Afghanistan by now. But in the latter case, we're not even moving in the right direction! Bush's legacy lives on, almost 2 years after he was shown the door... at some point we have to quit blaming Bush and ask ourselves what needs to be done NOW to change course in this country.

Can't we at least move in the right direction? Health Care "Reform" that strengthened the private insurance conglomerates, failure to restore our civil liberties, throwing so many loyal groups under the bus (as much you may hate that phrase)... what does he expect will happen come November 2012, let alone November 2010?

As far as I've noticed you haven't been explaining why you think the policies and legislative actions are progressive. Sunday I was dining with a couple of friends who are MOR republicans, not particularly political. Obama's actions regarding the war and failures on health care reform were too much like Bush even for them. And the Cat Food Commission scares them, too.

OK, there are some things I'm disappointed about, among them the retaining of some Bush unconstitutional policies and the failure to prosecute Bush admin officials (including Bush and Cheney themselves) for designing and implementing them.

Nevertheless, Obama is not Bush. The stimulus package is not Bush. The jobs bill is not Bush. Even this weak health insurance reform is not Bush.

Right wing billboards in some parts of the country display the grinning face of the Frat Boy with the caption "Do you miss me yet?" No, I don't and it's going to take a lot more disappointment in Obama than I'm feeling before I do.
