Looking at Rahm

It's a good thing for Rahm Emanuel that he's not going back to Illinois to run for Governor or Senate...but they like him in Chicago.

Our Illinois poll this week found that statewide Emanuel is a pretty unpopular figure. Only 29% of voters have a favorable opinion of him with 50% viewing him negatively. He's pretty universally reviled by Republicans (5/77 favorability) while Democrats are positive toward him but more tepidly so (52/21 favorability.) Independents split against him by a 21/62 margin as well.

Although there's a general sense that it's been liberal Democrats disenchanted with Emanuel he's actually more popular with them than he is with folks from the moderate or conservative wing of the party. Liberal Democrats give him a +40 favorability (59/19), moderate ones give him a +26 (51/25), and with the conservative wing of the party he's at a +14 (29/15).

Emanuel may not be very well liked down state but his numbers in the city of Chicago are strong. 50% of city voters on the poll said they had a favorable opinion of him to 30% with a negative one. In the rest of the state he's at a 24/54. It's going to be a crowded and likely strong field of candidates but Emanuel starts out with high name recognition and a pretty good degree of popularity in the city.

For example, Biden could've said, "The PUMAs and shit-stirring professional left media whores should stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives. This President has done an incredible job. He’s kept his promises."

Or Biden could've said, "The POL (Perpetually Outraged "Liberals"), many of whom never liked Pres. Obama in the first place, should stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives. This President has done an incredible job. He’s kept his promises."

That can't be right, in view of the fact that in the latest Gallup, 74% approve (that's not 90%, let along "strongly approve). Can you please cite the polls which found 90% of liberals who "strongly support" of the President's job?

Actually, I think Emmanuel is just the kind of colorful, connected figure Chicagoans might want to bring attention to their (our) city. Getting attention is one of the main problems here. I don't think anyone wants another Michael Bilandic. Now, a nine-fingered, cussing, world-known Jewish mayor. That would be interesting.

Obama rates much higher in Chicago. And 30% is an unusually high negative rating for someone who isn't in public office. Those numbers don't look good for Rahm.

Remember, this is a one-party city...thus the definitions expand. The divisions aren't liberal or conservative as much as ethnic and social. Blacks are by and large liberal however their views on religious issues are more conservative and so are the people who represent them. Hispanics have their bloc, Poles theirs as well as the infamous "Lakefront Liberals" who are predominately Jewish and GLTBQ. Remember, Rahm represented the 5th district that includes many of those Lakefronters and they had no problems with him in the House or the White House.

Initially I didn't think Rahm would do well but after speaking with a friend who works inside City Hall it looks like Richie is quietly going to annoint him as the heir apparent and pull ranks around him. There are really few other big names ready to get into this...Jesse Jackson Jr. is having his own problems and Luis Guiterrez has no interest in the job. If Daley gives his open blessing, Rahm could well be on his way to working on the 5th floor.
