First, Obama himself demanded that we keep his feet to the fire.
We did NOT grind him down. Rather, we expressed dismay when he tacked hard to the right, giving corporations far more than individuals.
If anyone has been grinding him down, and I agree, there was a group, it would be those who called Obama the worst president in history, those who promised to stop everything to insure he has only one term, and those who called him a liar.

20. Those were the two worst compromises of all.

He had the entire country ready to support him on any REAL reform in either of those areas. (We both know the teabagger outrage over health care was all Koch Brothers BS) Instead, he gave more power to the corporations causing the problems, in both cases.

He didn't do that alone of course. Chris Dodd played a huge role in both betrayals. He didn't have to worry about being voted out of office, and I'm sure we will all know which Wall Street criminal organization he's taken a job with, within the next few weeks. Other DLC senators were equally complicit. But the president dropped the ball the minute he allowed Rahm Emanuel and his medicare privatizing brother give him any advice on health care, and shunned an actual DOCTOR (Howard Dean) who was advocating the best common sense solution - a true public option, competing with the insurance companies and thereby forcing them to either clean up their act or go out of the business. That was the logical answer. NOT giving them millions of mandatory customers with no cost controls.

But we don't do nuance well here. I would have to paraphrase, but essentially he said this: The country is facing big problems and we will need to work together to get something done. He said this won't be easy ... that both Republicans and Democrats believe in certain basic things that they will not stray from. He said he's not so naive to think that the 2012 politicking won't start right away and interfere with getting something done for the country. He said that while we are all proud Democrats or proud Republicans, we are prouder to be Americans. (Well, he's probably really wrong on that last part, but the sentiment is necessary).

He never said: "I will compromise with you."

He actually said a lot more, and there is a video of it posted. If I find it, I'll come back and add the link.
