The middle class will not need their taxcut two years from now?

The President and the Democrats say they will let the Bush taxcuts die in two years. Will not the middle class need those taxcuts even more two years from now?

Do they expect employers to give raises to make up for these taxcuts?

How do the Democrats counter the Republican argument that this will be a tax increase on the middle class, two years from now?

We are only digging ourselves into a deeper hole.

We should attempt to climb out while we have the chance.

1. The idea is that in a better economic atmosphere which Obama is certainly hoping for in 2012

that there will be more clout behind ending the tax cuts for the rich and making the tax cuts for the middle class permanent. I don't think they are just planning to scrap the middle class tax cut.

The taxcuts replaced pay raises for many folks. I don't expect that to change in the next two years. The point is that Democrats will be in a much weaker position two years from now, most likely, and they have blown the chance to let the Bush taxcuts expire, middle class and all. Nobody says it would be painless. There is pain in a recession or depression, whatever you wish to call it. It would be nice if there was no pain. But it is for the future good. As it is, we are taking a poison pill.

I also think the payroll tax holiday is a bad idea in the long run. For one thing, even billionaires will benefit from it, although it's just a drop in the bucket compared to their other tax breaks. In addition, it will not do much to stimulate the economy, will add to the deficit (which Social Security has never done before), and will be hard to end after just one year. Republicans will portray it as a massive tax increase on the middle class. By the 2012 election, they'll have half of America believing that Obama raised their taxes by 50 percent.
