Again, DEMOCRATS made history today, and it was also DEMOCRATS who have fought so hard on the DREAM ACT (which, sadly, came up short).

What prompted the WH to get more hands-on to repealing DADT was an effective stunt done by some major G&L donors. Back in early 2009 some major G&L donors backed out of a major fundraiser for President Obama and V.P. Biden was suppose to headline this event. This situation attracted the press, which is why I know about it. It would have been embarrassing for Biden to speak in front of a nearly empty ballroom. Withdrawing money from Obama forced the WH to take more interest in DADT.

So the lesson we Progressives should take is to withhold our money and volunteer time to pressure Obama to treat us and our ideas with respect.

than the corporatist power element that controls Washington. The stuff they are lined up against to not give ANY ground on is anything that affects the money and power of those at the top (like the tax rates, the estate tax, HCR, social security, etc., anything to do with immigration and free trade, etc.). They probably really don't care much how DADT really goes, except how it might serve them with other agenda.

This was something the elites figured they could "hand" us, and not screw themselves in their strategy next year to BREAK this government's bank, and then tear down all of the programs that benefit us instead of the elites at the top. And by doing this, they probably hope to tone down the blowback that ultimately will come when they go after their real agenda later.

About the only risk they have is with those religious types in their party which are dead set against gay rights. One could argue that this might even help them if they have plans for expanding war-making in the future, and want to at some point institute a draft. Without DADT, there's one less barrier people can use to avoid the draft.

I'm very glad for my gay friends, etc. that they no longer have to live a lie to serve their country, but we still have a long way to go before we can overcome the sellout of our party on things that really will matter in the coming years if we are to retain any form of democracy, middle class, etc.

That doesn't count. In case you missed it, the Dream Act was blocked by the Senate and may not be revived for a long time. Yes, ending DADT was a great accomplishment, by the failure of the Dream Act was pathetic. And if Obama should get credit for DADT, he should also get blame for the Dream Act. Fair is fair.

There are several formalities before our gay service members are safe to come out and openly serve. It has to be fully and formally implemented by the Pentagon - Joint Chiefs and Defense Secretary. One act does not a "progressive" administration make. If I recall correctly, Nixon floated the idea of a guaranteed national income. Does that make him a progressive? I can't see that this cost Obama a damn thing - unlike say, fighting to restore some level of progressivism to the tax structure, or creating a jobs program, or putting a leash on the madness of our military in their despicable drone attacks, or gutting the "for-profit contractor" system blowing up the cost of our already illegitimate wars and occupations abroad, or going after war criminals, or standing up to the vampire Pharma and Health "Insurance" Corps, or breaking up the big banks, or or or.

And the fact that what should be a given - that he would actually try to accomplish something progressive, just, sane - should be an occasion for such wild jubilation is telling; deep satisfaction that people will be relieved of an awful burden is one thing; dancing in the streets because Obama actually supported it is quite another.

So good for him in this one thing.

I will give credit where credit is due - thank you to all GLBT service members who helped accomplish this. Thank you to those who have struggled in good faith against overwhelming odds and despicable oppression. Thank you to those who have helped our ignorant populace see the light in this particular issue, thank you for your service. I am very sorry to all of you that this happened in the first place in what is supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave. Keep up the good fight, I will help as I can. I am very sorry that you must still face bigotry and hatred from so many of the ignorant.

That, is giving credit where it is most due. Thanks to Obama and to the politicians who supported this.

That being said, it is my opinion that this post shows far more snark and anger towards your fellow democrats than it does gratitude or understanding for what has been accomplished. Your anger is misplaced and your gratitude should come first to those who have struggled so hard and sacrificed so much.

I give credit to all who helped accomplish this, but this act alone is not enough to redeem those who have betrayed their ideals and their supporters so deeply - those we refer to as politicians (whichever side they may claim). This act alone does not negate the endless ambition, greed and corruption so rampant within our government. I am, however, grateful, that they finally chose to face this issue and to follow through with at least one promise.

In closing, this OP does not strike me as well intended. You can give thanks without also insulting and belittling so many people. I am sorry you felt the need to use this as an attack against those who's views you oppose.
